The Life+ fund

LIFE is the EU’s financial instrument supporting environmental and nature conservation projects throughout the EU, as well as in some candidate, acceding and neighbouring countries. Since 1992, LIFE has co-financed some 3708 projects, contributing approximately €2.8 billion to the protection of the environment.

LIFE+ Nature and Biodiversity is one of the main strands of the European Union’s funding programme for the environment. It supports projects that contribute to the implementation of the EU’s Birds and Habitats Directives, the Natura 2000 network and that contribute to the EU’s goal of halting the loss of biodiversity.

Natura 2000

Natura 2000 is the key instrument to protect biodiversity in the European Union. It is an ecological network of protected areas, set up to ensure the survival of Europe’s most valuable species and habitats. Natura 2000 is based on the 1979 Birds Directive and the 1992 Habitats Directive. The green infrastructure it provides safeguards numerous ecosystem services and ensures that Europe’s natural systems remain healthy and resilient.

Within the participating Counties of the project there are a total of:

409 Natura 2000 sites in of Västra Götaland
109 Natura 2000 sites in the County of Halland
186 Natura 2000 sites in the County of Blekinge
235 Natura 2000 sites in the County of Stockholm

23 Natura 2000 sites of the sites above are included in the project

The Swedish Environmental Protection Ageny

The Environmental Protection Agency is the public agency in Sweden that has an overview of conditions in the environment and progress in environmental policy. It also has the task of coordinating, monitoring and evaluating efforts, involving many agencies, to meet Sweden’s environmental objectives. The Agency works on behalf of the Swedish Government.
